Obituary for Thomas Russell Miller Jr.

Thomas Russell Miller, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at Glendale Nursing Home. Thomas was born on March 31, 1929, in Newark, NJ, and was the son of the late Thomas R. and Alice (Knott) Miller.

Tom graduated from Nutley High School, and went on to attend Rutgers University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. While at college, he met and married his first wife, Winifred Malloy Miller. Tom joined the Navy, went to officer candidate school, and was commissioned as an Ensign. He served as an engineering officer aboard the U.S.S. Lloyd Thomas (DDE-764) in the Mediterranean, until his honorable discharge in March of 1955. He received the National Defense Service Ribbon and the Occupational Service Ribbon (European Clasp). He continued to serve with the reserves, where he earned the rank of Captain. He was the Blue and Gold Officer for the US Naval Academy. Thomas retired after a long and prosperous engineering career with General Electric Company in Schenectady. He met his second wife, Marianne, at Calvary Episcopal Church. The two were friends for many years, and they married on December 28, 2013.

Thomas was an avid golfer, and he loved his sailboat and cars. He was an active member of Calvary Episcopal Church, and he served as the Senior Warden for the Calvary Episcopal Church Vestry.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne Josefiak Miller; his children, Thomas Charles (Suzanne) Miller, Keith (Lenny Berman) Miller, and Karen (Sean) Grady; his grandchildren, Benjamin (Virginia) Miller, Dr. Linda (Eric Wood) Miller, and LCDR Daniel (Emily) Miller; his great-grandchildren, Andrew Miller, Hailey Miller, Grayson Wood, Oliver Miller, Clara Miller, and Henry Miller; his step-great grandchildren Sarah Shaw, Alexis Chainao, and Jacob Chainao; his stepchildren, Glenn (Mina) Josefiak, Lynn (Sean) Remson, Joanne (Daniel) Oakes; and his step grandchildren, Rebecca and Brooke Leona Remson, and Jackson and Denver Oakes. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Thomas is preceded in death by his first wife, Winifred M. Miller and his sister, May (Thomas) Gibson.

A Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 10:00 AM, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 85 Lake Hill Rd, Burnt Hills, NY.

Interment with military honors will immediately follow at Calvary Episcopal Cemetery, Burnt Hills, NY.

A reception will follow in the Calvary Parish Hall.
