Obituary for Lorraine Freiburghouse MacQueen

Dateline: Schenectady, NY
Vivian Lorraine Mershon Freiburghouse MacQueen was born on February 5, 1922 to Alfred V. Mershon and Winnifred Lampard in Schenectady, NY.
Lorraine was raised in a large extended family, though she was an only child, and had just one first cousin. She received lots of love from many older relatives and made sure she visited and cared for them while at the same time she was raising four daughters.
During the Depression, Lorraine and her parents traveled across the country in a Model A, camping along the way, and visiting many national parks. Her father taught her to drive when she was twelve so she could help him build a stone house, which is on Swaggertown Rd. She loved to tell us all about her long trip in the rumple seat and working with her father. “I’ll always remember the time…” She had lots of stories!
In 1943, Lorraine graduated from Russell Sage College with a Home Economics degree. While there, she met the love of her life, Edward Freiburghouse, at a dance and jitterbugged into his heart to the tunes of Benny Goodman’s live orchestra. (Another good story!) They continued dancing the rest of their lives together!
They were great models for their four daughters of how to care for each other and provide a safe, loving, close family. Mom also taught us how to cook and made sure we sat down every evening to a family dinner, where we discussed life and complained and joked around.
Lorraine was a long-time member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Burnt Hills, where she became the first female warden and the first woman delegate to the National Episcopal Convention. She had a strong belief in the spiritual aspects of living a good life.
Mom was an enabler who encouraged us to be our best, and she gave us the freedom, security and means to succeed. She got great pleasure in seeing how we lived our lives and in seeing her eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren grow.
In 1992, four years after Eddie’s passing, she married John MacQueen, of Schenectady and Lake George. They spent many years cruising the world till he passed in 2009.
She had a long, happy life in Schenectady and sailing on Lake George!
Lorraine leaves behind: Jane Greene, her husband Jim, their daughters Melissa and Robyn; Sally Paterson, her husband Ian, their daughters Katy and Holly; Lorraine Niederer, her husband Tom Scrodin, sons Christopher and Ethan; Holly Schaus, her husband Joe, their sons Simon and Eli; her step-daughter Peggy Neeb, her husband Bill, their daughter Kim. Her great grandchildren include: Hatch, Gabe, Ruby, Evan, Lucy, Sadie, Lennon, and Reyna. She was predeceased by her husband Edward Freiburghouse, her husband John MacQueen and her son-in-law Otto Christopher Niederer.
