Obituary for John Bromley Moses

Dateline: Rexford, NY
John Bromley Moses, age 97, of Olde Nott Farm Road, Rexford, NY died on April 4, 2019 at Schenectady Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born on June 5, 1921 in New Rochelle, NY and was the son of the late Henry and Beatrice (Anderson) Moses.
John was a graduate of New Rochelle High School and Princeton University, Class of 1942. While at Princeton, he rowed on the crew team for four years and was a member of the Quadrangle Club. John later graduated from Columbia Medical School College of Physicians & Surgeons. He served his internship and residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. John was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Army during medical school and served state side until the end of the war.
Dr. Moses practiced internal medicine and cardiology in Scarsdale, NY for over 46 years. He was on staff at White Plains Hospital and Bronxville Hospital. Medicine was his life, not just a professional career. He valued the long-lasting relationships with families he cared for over decades and made house calls for the super seniors right up until he retired in 2004. He was an active member of Hitchcock Presbyterian Church.
John spent countless hours at Fox Meadow Tennis Club in Scarsdale, playing both tennis and platform tennis. He also spent a great deal of time at Shenorock Shore Club in Rye, NY. He had an avid love for windsurfing and sailing and snorkeling. One year, John and his best friend decided they were going to windsurf every month of the year on the Sound. Somehow, they pulled it off. In his eighties, John took up playing squash. He excelled to a level that allowed him to compete in age group competition in the National Squash Championships.
Dr. Moses was a writer who loved to research the lifestyles and illnesses of famous political figures. His book, “Presidential Courage” was published in 1980 and led him on the lecture circuit for book signings and to radio and television interviews. He collected unique historical political items as a hobby.
Both of John’s sons played music from a young age. John spent endless hours supporting their musical effort and traveling to hear their bands play both during and after their college years. He always joked that his deafness late in life was surely a result of the loud rock music for so many years.
John’s wife, Sue, always described him as “my angel on Earth”. Most who knew him would agree. He was devoted to his family, patients, and friends. He was gentle and caring and always put everyone else first. John was “smart as a whip”, which made him interesting and fun to be around personally and professionally.
Besides his loving wife Susan, John is survived by his sons John (Meredith) and William (Sue) Moses; his wonderful grandchildren Kate (Clay) Moses Austin, Ellery (Travis) Moses Rush, Garet Moses and Zachary (Grace) Moses; his very special great grandchildren Mason and Harper Austin and his beloved corgi Patrick.
John was predeceased by his older brother, Henry.
Services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to Quadrangle Club c/o Princeton University, 330 Alexander Street, Princeton, NJ 08540.
