Obituary for George Robert Holzhauer

George Robert Holzhauer
George R. Holzhauer, 83 years, of Rexford, passed into eternal rest at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, NY on March 6, 2021. George was born on December 8, 1937 to the late Herman Karl and Gladys Catherine (Reynolds) Holzhauer in Troy, NY.

George was an educator at heart, graduating from Lansingburgh High School in 1955, receiving his master’s degree in European History from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY in 1959, and completing his post-graduate work at the University of NC at Chapel Hill. He then received a teaching position at Schoharie Central School where he taught High School Social Studies for 32 years until his retirement. On Father’s Day, George sent his family a card that read: “Knowledge is Power. Read!” He was an avid reader himself and considered every book to be his best friend.

George was a person of faith. During his younger years he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy, NY, which always held a special place in his heart. George loved being part of the Emmaus and Lay Witness Mission movements, sharing his faith with various churches in the 1980s and 1990s. One of his fondest memories was his trip to the Holy Land in 2009. George will long be remembered for leading countless small group studies, beloved by many, in whatever church he’d been a part.

George was an avid bridge player and loved the weekly bridge gatherings at Alplaus United Methodist Church as well as those at The Jewish Community Center in Niskayuna, often partnering with his brother-in-law Joel Prescott of Clifton Park. He enjoyed visiting the national parks in the west, whale watching, shows, music, puzzles and his beloved Boston Red Sox. He and his brother-in-law Joel Prouty spent time every autumn enjoying the offerings of Skidmore’s Encore program.

Above all else, George loved his family. He married his wife Phyllis Barrett on August 24, 1963. They have 3 sons: Eric of Rexford, Gregory of Corinth, and Geoffrey (Barbara) of Scotia; 2 grandchildren: Vanessa Raye of Altamont, and Timathy (Casie) of Scotia; 3 great-grandchildren: Zachary Hagen, and Kaysen and Kyler Harpster of Altamont; George’s beloved brother Glenn (Irene) Holzhauer of Hudson; sister-in-law Isabel Prescott of Rexford; brother-in-law Joel Prouty of Rexford; nephews: Kevin (Jennifer) Shea of Rexford, Scott (Denise) Holzhauer of Valatie; niece Lynne (Erik) Denny of Troy; three grandnephews: Cameron and Brady Holzhauer of Valatie, and Tristan Shea of Rexford; two grandnieces: Jayden Denny of Troy and Annika Shea of Rexford; cousin Nancy (James) Stocking of Yardley, PA.

George was predeceased by his sister-in-law Evelyn (Joel) Prouty of Rexford and cousin Philip Reynolds of Troy.

Donations may be given in George’s memory to Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, 816, NY-50, Burnt Hills, NY 12027 or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service is planned at the church for later this year.

The family wishes to thank Wesley Health Care Center for the compassionate care extended to George during the last year.
