Obituary for Dorothy O'Carroll (Carroll)

Dorothy O'Carroll (Carroll)
Dorothy C. O’Carroll, 89, of Clifton Park, New York, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 9, 1927 in New York City, the daughter of William A. Carroll and Helen (Heffeman) Carroll. After her mother passed away, her father married Anastasia (Walsh) Carroll who helped raise her.
She was a loving and gracious wife, mother, grandmother and warm friend to many.
Dorothy grew up on 125th Street and attended Cathedral High School in Manhattan. She graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent with a Bachelor of Arts. She remained close friends with many of her college classmates.
After graduating from college, she worked for the City of New York as a social worker. This work took her throughout the city with a particular focus on helping immigrant families in the tenements of the lower East Side.
She met her future husband, Brendan P. O’Carroll at a college dance and they were married on April 11, 1953 in the Epiphany Church in Manhattan. Dorothy and Brendan raised their five children in Scarsdale, NY and then moved to Clifton Park in 1971 as a result of Brendan’s position as General Counsel with the New York State Thruway. Brendan passed away in 1976.
She was active in her church and community and had a number of interests including gardening. She was a long-time member and leader of the Clifton Park Garden Club.
Dorothy also had a very strong interest in genealogy. Long before the internet provided easy answers, she thoroughly enjoyed perusing libraries, church records and file rooms in search of her family history.
She was a keen observer of current events, politics, and the stock market. She was a passionate reader and thoroughly enjoyed a good conversation about what was going on in the world.
Dorothy is survived by her five children; Sharon Cahill Castle and her husband Robert, Maureen Duffy and her husband Thomas, Patricia O’Carroll and her husband Joseph Foley, John O’Carroll and his wife Karen, and William O’Carroll and his wife Patricia. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother William and son in law, John Cahill.
She also leaves 10 grandchildren whom she loved and cherished: Brett and Sean Cahill; Patricia, Michael and Kevin Duffy; Christopher, Cameron, and Cara Foley; and Emily and Meghan O’Carroll. She is also survived by her cousin Charles Skoglund.
Dorothy was a lovely woman who will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 569 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park on Monday, October 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
